Six Indian Tribes in Virginia feel they have the right to move forward with their independence. They have asked for Federal recognition from the government and are hoping it is granted. The tribes are receiving opposition from groups who are concerned that the tribes are only seeking the recognition so they can build casinos. The tribes are looking for the recognition for other reasons. "What it does for us is puts us on an even playing field with 562 tribes across the nation that have federal recognition," said Cheif Adams of the Upper Mattaponi Tribe. The tribe feels with the recognition they can move forward with providing education and economic freedom for their members. The Bill that would allow for the recognition has already passed the House of Representatives and is expected to pass in the Senate. The opposition to the Bill stems from people who believe the tribes are just using the recognition so they can gain a financial advantage by building casinos.
