Online Casino Gambling Monopoly Give to Charity |
Greece may operate an online casino gambling monopoly, but that doesn’t mean that the state-run company isn’t charitable. In fact, OPAP, the state gambling monopoly, recently showed its more charitable side with a donation to help fire victims in the country. The online casinos industry – whether a monopoly or license business is an extremely lucrative industry and one that until recently was not know for socially conscious behavior.
But this is not the case with OPAP, the company donated a hefty sum of Euro 25 million to go directly to help victims of the country’s wildfires. Just this past summer, many in the country were affected by ravaging wildfires that destroyed homes and property and left some with nothing more than an open plot of land. So the fact that the online casinos industry was willing to step up and help these victims shows a change in the industry that is apparent outside of Greece as well.
In Europe, the new online casinos gambling legislation has forced companies to look beyond just profits, and at the long-term effects of gambling, and the impact that online gambling can have on a country. Specifically, European online casino companies now spend a portion of revenue to go toward awareness and prevention of problem and underage gambling.
For OPAP, the company was able to report a relatively successful third quarter even with the large donation though the donation did cause the company to report less third quarter earnings than the previous quarter. |
