Guilty Appeal In NBA Gambling Scandal Involving Referee Donaghy

The NBA is very concerned with their league image. The league is constantly monitoring what players wear and how they conduct themselves. It comes as a bit of a surprise that while policing the league, they have failed to police their own employees.

Tim Donaghy, a former NBA referee was involved in a major gambling scandal over the past year. He has been removed from his job as a referee, and has already plead guilty to charges related to the scandal.

Now, another player in the scandal has plead guilty. James Battista revealed to a judge in Brooklyn that he took part in paying for information from Donaghy. Originally, Battista was going to fight the charges.

His lawyers told the court last week that he planned on taking the case to trial, but a last minute plea deal from the prosecution had him change his mind. He agreed to plea guilty to a charge of conspiring to make illegal bets.

Since the deal was made, Donaghy is relieved of his duty to testify in the federal case. He is currently waiting for his sentencing from his guilty plea. He could receive up to 25 years in prison, though he is not likely to get that much time. The sentencing is may 22nd.
